Bathing and Drying

Sky relaxing in his warm bath!

At the core of every grooming procedure is the bathing and drying process. Grooming services are categorized as either a "full body haircut and bath" or a "bath-only" service.

At Doggone Groomers we use only the finest quality organic shampoos and conditioners for your pet.  We have a wide variety of shampoos which are specific to your pet's needs.  We offer medicated shampoos for our friends with allergies or dry flaky skin.  Your pet's coat will come out looking and feeling soft, silky, shiny and smelling great!

Drying your pet is a very important process.  Not only must the pet be clean and dry before styling, but the coat must be prepared for styling. Unlike most groomers we take the time and care to hand dry your pet instead of putting them in a cage dryer.  This provides a much safer and pleasant experience for your pet.  Once the drying process is complete, we then begin to style your pet to his/her specific needs.

Brushing and Combing

Shu Mai and Kanani dry and fluffy after their bath!

Brushing and combing your pet is the first step following a pre-grooming inspection.  These are essential tasks for every grooming visit.  Even short and smooth coated dog breeds benefit from a brief period of brushing with special rubber brushes. There are many types of brushes and combs, and part of being a professional groomer is to know when and how to use them.

Regular brushing and combing contribute to the health of skin and coat. Proper brushing and combing does contribute to your pet's health. Matts and tangling are uncomfortable, and may have organic matter like weeds poking at their skin under the coat. Matted coats are very uncomfortable and may cause skin irritations.  Because we live in Hawaii, our weather is warm all year, keeping your pet well groomed prevents matting.  If matting occurs, it can trap heat and prevent your pet's body from cooling down.  We also have to deal with external parasites such as fleas and ticks all year around.  Matts prevent us from seeing down to the skin where these parasites feed and multiply.

Ear Cleaning

Cocoa trying to show how nice and clean her ears are!!

We perform ear inspections, plucking, cleaning and deodorizing, which contribute to healthy ears, free of painful infections. These services keep your pet's ears free from painful infections.  Hairs inside the ear canal can trap bacteria, causing ear infections.  This is a very important part of grooming, since Hawaii is tropical, we have high levels of humidity which may cause yeast infections in the ears.  Between grooming appointments pet owners should practice ear health maintenance and check their dog's ears at least once a week.

Your Pet's Skin

Nike, relaxing after a day at the spa!

We have the opportunity to improve the condition of your pets skin. There's dry skin, oily skin and irritated skin to address and every shampoo and conditioner will affect different skin types in different ways. Knowledge and experience is key in making the right shampoo and conditioner choices.  We use a wide variety of shampoos to soothe your pet's skin, make it smell good, and put a shine to a dull coat.  We offer a hot oil treatment for those pets with dry flaky skin.  Please remember, one grooming treatment will not perform "miracles"!  We usually recommend regular and frequent grooming visits for full benefits of our services if your pet has skin and coat problems.  If we see your pet's skin is very serious, we will recommend you see a veterinarian, where your pet can receive the proper care.  Your pet's best interest is our first priority.

Nail Clipping

Dillan looking cute!

We include nail inspection and clipping as part of our "full service" grooming services, and as part of the basic fee without assessing additional cost.

Dogs need their nails clipped on a regular basis, usually every 3 to 4 weeks. It is not uncommon for dog owners to wait too long between nail clippings. Overdue nails raise health issues. Extended growth can result in painful ingrown nails, and will sometimes curl into the pad where your veterinarian must then treat it.  Elongated nails affect the comfort and health of dogs. Some dogs will find it difficult to place their full body weight on their feet with discomfort from elongated nails. As a result, these dogs develop sore feet, legs and hips and overall discomfort. Just to walk can then be a painful experience for them.

Cats also need their nails trimmed since their nails are so sharp, they get stuck on things which may cause the nail to tear off the pad if it gets too stuck on something.  Not to mention their nails are so sharp, they can do harm to us if we should get scratched by them.

Anal Gland Expression

Casper posing!

Just inside the anal opening your dog has anal glands, which have two sacs on either side of the anus. Normally, these sacs discharge a fluid right before the dog goes to the bathroom. The fluid acts as a lubricant and promotes a nice, easy bowel movement.

On occasion, the glands become clogged which causes discomfort. A dog with clogged anal glands will drag his butt across the floor in an attempt to relieve the discomfort. The clogged glands may also cause constipation. Some dogs never have a problem with their anal glands and for others, it's a chronic problem.

We will express the clogged fluid by gently squeezing the anus on both sides of the glands. Expression of anal gland fluid should only be done by someone with experience because if done incorrectly, the fluid can be forced backwards, further impacting the glands.
